Welcome to the Official "Hometown" Site for the City of Greenback, Tennessee.  Greenback is located in the heart of East Tennessee about 45 minutes from both Knoxville and The Great Smokey Mountains National Park.  The City was established in 1883 by Lorenzo Thompson and was named after the Greenback political party, party of town figure Jonathon Tipton, after several sure fire attempts were rejected. The town, for long, has had a small population, according to the US Census 2000 the population was 954.

Greenback is such an ideal town to live in and to be associated with.  It most definitely has its perks such as a long history of having NO City tax and lower costs of living comparatively.  City water and natural gas are available along with a new recycling center placed in the town by the Loudon County Commission.  The most important of all perks is the close knit community that Greenback has historically boasted.

So whether you live in Greenback, visit on occasion, or have never been to the town before you are definitely welcome and in for a treat.  So please visit this great East Tennessee Secret located in the beautiful foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains.
